GAME ON: THE FAILURE OF THE FORBES ARTICLE ON BREASTFEEDING
"If we understand the mechanism and motives of the group mind, it is now possible to control and regiment the masses according to our will without them knowing it." --Edward Bernays, "Father of the Public Relations Industry", known for getting women to smoke in the late 1920's through a public relations campaign and created the US public relations behind overthrowing the democratically elected government of Guatemala in the 1950's.
This era in history should be titled, "Dueling social media marketing on infant feeding," or, "Facebook Games on infant feeding" or maybe just, "Mind Games on infant feeding." Edward Bernays would be proud of all you propagandists and social marketeers! Keep the lies a'coming, baffle us with your brillance and along the way destroy everyone's faith in evidence-based science. Truth or the honesty in educating the public no longer exists, maybe it never existed? After the US election or should we say the coronation of the presumptive King of Entertainment, the stage managers are trying to convince the public that only certain publications are the truth-tellers for the nation. Hm...yeah sure, whatever, whatever, whatever.
Okay infant feeding experts, lets look at the Forbes article of December 20, 2016 entitled, "Yet Another Study Claims and Fails to Show That Breastfeeding Is Best," by Kavin Senapathy. The author critiques a recent study (Journal of Pediatrics-October 2016) entitled, "Disparities in Breastfeeding: Impact on Maternal and Child Health Outcomes and Costs). Senapathy singles out one of the six authors to this study, Dr. Melissa Bartick for criticism. Why? I am not sure why. Senapathy seems to have a problem with researchers who feel compassion for their subjects. Bartick had expressed concern that sub-optimal breastfeeding impacts non-Hispanic black and Hispanic families disproportionately. The implication appears to me that Senapathy believes that scientists should set aside "sentiment" or concern for subjects in their research. I on the other hand believe that science and scientists have to be ethical and concerned with the health and well-being of their subjects. That concern does not lessen the science but safeguards the subjects.
Senapathy then uses her experts to critique the study. She "reached out" to Dr. Emiliano Tatar, Dr. Amy Tuteur and Dr. Daniel Summers (formerly known as Russell Saunders). It was the usual propaganda material that supposedly proves that breastfeeding is no better than infant formula. Although these experts seem to agree that in the case of Necroticizing Enterocolitis-NEC, breastfeeding is better than infant formula.
What I found most interesting about Senapathy and her experts was that they all are listed writers for the Genetic Literacy Project. The Project was founded by Jon Entine who is also the executive director. He is also an author and journalist. He has written 3 books on genetics. One is called, "Let them Eat Precaution: How Politics is Undermining the Genetic Revolution." (The precautionary principle is the basis of the Cartegena Biosafety Protocol of 2000 signed by 68 nations--https://www.cbd.int/doc/legal/cartagena-protocol-en.pdf
The title seems to suggest that Jon Entine believes in throwing caution to the wind in support of genetic engineering. And not too surprising is a TruthWiki report that states that the Genetic Literacy Project is a "GMO lobbying outfit funded by Monsanto." And they characterize Jon Entine, founder of the Genetic Literacy Project, as a media-savvy corporate propagandist and not a scientist.
http://www.truthwiki.org/genetic-literacy-project/
Entine also wrote a book called, "Taboo: Why Black Athletes Dominate Sports and Why We're Afraid to Talk About It." It was perceived by some people as a racist view of human relations. (Wikipedia on Jon Entine).
Getting back to the author, Kavin Senapathy, of the Forbes article, she has also written an article for Forbes entitled, "Beware of Accidentally Starving Your Breastfed Newborn, Warns The Fed Is Best Foundation." Monsanto Europe interviewed Kavin Senapathy in an article called "Fighting the hydra of science myths: an interview with Kavin Senapathy." According to the Monsanto article she is the co-Executive Director of international pro-science, pro-biotech organization March against Myths (an organization to counter March Against Monsanto). Thus it appears that she writes for an organization that is funded by Monsanto-Genetic Literacy Project and is interviewed by Monsanto Europe. And the experts she uses in her article are also writers for the Monsanto-funded Genetic Literacy Project: Dr. Amy Tuteur, Dr. Emiliano Tatar and Dr. Daniel Summers aka Russell Saunders.
So why is Monsanto using these writers to create public doubt about the value of breastfeeding? Maybe its because the infant formula that is on the market is composed of genetically engineered ingredients from dairy milk or soy proteins to the vitamins and minerals, the DHA/ARA. Infant formula is a package of gmos. If more women exclusively breastfeed, will Monsanto financially survive? If more black women exclusively breastfeed, what will Monsanto do to survive?
When I started to think about writing this post, I thought I would use the patents to show these people the evidence of how valuable breastfeeding is and how even the infant formula industry considers its own product a risk. These patents are legal documents. The industry knows the truth. But these propagandists that have the public ear, have no interest in the truth. Their bread and butter is made by disseminating doubt about breastfeeding.

Reflections on Hurricane Matthew, Election Mania, and Human Milk Patenting
"Historically, the most terrible things-war, genocide, and slavery have resulted not from disobedience, but from obedience."--Howard Zinn
It rained for a while and then the winds blew. I watched the giant oak from one of my windows that was not bordered or shuttered closed. It twisted and it danced, gyrating through the air. I wondered when the limbs would snap and drop onto the road. How long could the poor tree stand to be a puppet to the gods of nature? Mesmerizing and frightening, I sat watching this gigantic tree fight for its life. There was no music to this dance. There was no remote to turn the channel or press the on or off switch. There was no newscaster to interpret and explain this event.
Hours and hours later, the winds died down and I learned that the Eye of the Storm had passed and had moved onward up the coast. I stepped outside and surveyed my front yard. The lawn was under water but hadn't reached the house. My Queen Palm tree had punched into the roof and my Cherry Laurel tree uprooted listing onto the roof and entangled in my cable, power and phone lines. I never heard these trees fall, not sure why I didn't hear it. In fact before I saw the trees, I thought this hurricane was not so bad. Hurricane Charlie (2004) was worse than this. With Charlie my house shook and groaned and in the aftermath roads were impassable. Matthew was a gentle giant of a storm in comparison. This time I was only out of power for 5 days not 11 days. Pretty amazing considering that my power lines from the house to the power pole were on the ground this time. But walking around the neighborhood, I could see that there was a lot of wind damage. Once again my view of my town is of blue tarps on roofs and mountains of tree limbs, roots and twigs dragged to the side of our roads. Sadly, many oaks as well as other trees were uprooted. Their massive roots exposed to the air, heaving concrete and earth in a display of the power of mother nature. I grieve for all the creatures, human and animal, plants and trees that suffer from such a storm.
I am tired. Hurricanes do that to people. We wait for the approach and prepare for the storm. Not much sleep and bone-tired from stress and the physical work. Then the storm and the inactivity, life interrupted. The power goes out and the isolation from the electronic world quiets my mind. Its rather peaceful without Facebook and the News. The hurricane was like putting a blanket over my head and drowning out the political madness we call elections. Didn't know what was going on and really didn't care. The only reality I had to deal with was my own storm, not the storm of the nation.
I'd like to say that when the power came back on, I delved right into the news. Instead I found myself distancing myself from the political storm. The big news I had missed was a recording of Donald Trump in 2005 making lewd and revolting comments about women. No surprise to me that he thinks women are only good for one thing. Most of us, women, have heard similar crap talk from men. Of course we always assume that our own boyfriends or husbands don't talk like that or think that way. But it is surprising that a man who thinks this way can become President. Yes, I guess not so surprising. Since 9-11, the American public is tolerant of war after war in the middle east, rendition and torture of suspected terrorists, drone assassinations of supposed enemies, the murdering of our black citizens without a trial. And with this election, will we tolerate more directed violence at people who have a different skin tone, faith, gender or sexual orientation?
While Hurricane Matthew blew away, there is this political storm brewing in our nation. And all I want to do is go to bed and put the covers over my head. "Wake me up when its over." I am tired. Tired of the insanity of our society and people pretending that everything is just hunky-dory (just fine). But dealing with this political storm is like dealing with a hurricane. Going to bed and putting the covers over your head, just postpones the inevitable. Ya have to go outside and look at the mess, the debris piled high, the damage. And then ya have to go to work to clean up the mess. It means that ya have to talk to your neighbors, help them if needed or just share the hurricane jokes.
So whats this got to do with human milk patenting? The political storm that has been brewing in this nation for almost 2 decades has infected every aspect of life. Organizations no longer feel the need to be transparent or accountable to members. Ethics have been replaced with a code of silence. Social marketing has replaced thoughtful communication. The same political authoritarianism I see in our political system has engulfed many breastfeeding organizations. I am weary and tired after 17 years of being a broken record regarding the importance of these patents.
These patents are legal documents in which the infant formula industry states the amazing properties of human milk components and their own product failures. Are these legal documents truth? Or is this some big chess game being played out by industry? And it isn't just the infant formula industry but also the food, supplement, vaccine and drug industries that are investing in the magic qualities of human milk. We are now aware that there are stem cells in human milk and that will be exploited and used to benefit industry. And yet we still have the social marketing of "choice" in infant feeding. In fact many breastfeeding advocates joined the bandwagon of support for people like the fearless formula feeder. Yet the choice of using infant formula damages the health of babies (and mothers). Those damaging effects of infant formula are admitted to in the patents owned by the infant formula industry.
We know the damaging effects of hurricanes. The government warns us of those dangers: death, destruction of property and loss of income. We are told to board up our homes and evacuate. All of the expert advice is directed at people who have the money to board up their homes, have transportation and money for gas to evacuate for days. The accuracy of the predictions of the path of a hurricane are less known. The experts aren't always right about the path that a hurricane will take. It's a game of roulette. Stay or Go? But for many the choice to leave or stay is written in their bank account balance and the belief in the accuracy of government or an expert's prediction. Like a hurricane, birth and breastfeeding is a choice based on your bank account and belief in the experts. No money, no choice. And if one is the least bit skeptical of experts, one makes a choice that "experts" don't understand.
"The prevalence of obesity and overweight in adults, children and
adolescents has increased rapidly over the past 30 years in the United
States and globally and continues to rise. Childhood overweight and
obesity currently affects 18 million
children under age 5 worldwide. Almost 30% of US children and
adolescents and between 10 and 30% of European children are overweight
or obese.
Increasingly it is believed that the first 6 months of life represent one of the most important postnatal periods for human fat mass development and consequently may be a critical window for programming excess of adiposity later in life. Moreover, human epidemiological data and animal studies evidence that elevated body weight at birth or during infancy are associated with a risk for development of diseases such as insulin resistance syndrome (also called metabolic syndrome), Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular problems later in life."
Truth or Fiction? And if its truth, why aren't we demanding that the industry stop advertising to parents? As for hurricanes and politics, I have no answers. We are living in challenging times where Truth has become irrelevant and Lies persist. I feel wind-blown and tattered like the leaves on the tree after the hurricane has passed. I feel as fragile as those leaves, just part of the debris left by the storm. Hurricane Matthew turned into the mother of all hurricanes.
